Los últimos treinta años han sido el escenario de profundas transformacio-nes, no sólo en el modo de producir y de trabajar, sino también, y sobre todo, en el modo de vivir y de comunicar. Hemos asistido a una cesura histórica y generacional; las certezas y seguridades de los padres han dado paso a la inestabilidad y precariedad de los hij os. Hemos asistido al debilitamiento de la institución denominada «Estado-nación» tras el proceso de reestructura-ción de la economía global que siguió a la crisis del fordismo, y también al surgimiento de un fanatismo identitario conservador y a la guerra perma-nente. Hemos asistido a la fractura de la actividad laboral, atrapada entre la búsqueda de estabilidad —que a menudo se ha transformado, y se transfor-ma todavía, en una jaula de constricciones— y el anhelo de una libertad de elección no siempre posible.

Éste es un libro de economía. Su propósito es describir y analizar críti-camente la forma actual del proceso económico que se ha desarrollado en el curso de las últimas tres décadas en los países occidentales. La tesis que queremos sostener es que la actual fase económica puede ser defi nida con la locución capitalismo cognitivo, locución esencial a la hora de captar la con-tinuidad, y al mismo tiempo la discontinuidad en relación con el régimen de acumulación precedente. Continuidad, porque nos movemos siempre en el cauce de las relaciones económicas capitalistas, al menos tal y como esen-cialmente se han venido manteniendo desde la primera revolución indus-trial; discontinuidad, porque la naturaleza del proceso de acumulación pasa de la producción material a la producción inmaterial de conocimiento. Éste es, además, un libro de economía política, porque el método utilizado deriva directamente de la economía política clásica, es decir, del estudio de las for-mas capitalistas de producción: el sistema económico es analizado, en efecto, a partir del estudio de las características del proceso de acumulación y, por lo tanto, de valorización. En segundo lugar, porque tiene la ambición de estu-diar la dinámica de las relaciones socio-económicas. En ello radica el sentido del atributo «política» junto al término economía: de la «ciencia del hogar» se pasa al estudio de la sociedad económica general, tratando de entrever los nexos de dominio y de poder propios del proceso de transformación socio-económica de los últimos años.
